Director, Risk Management

**Position Summary:**

Lead the strategic development of overall business insurance (property, casualty, cyber, workers compensation, executive, etc.) claims risk management programs. Manage the design, planning and execution of the overall risk management programs to reduce insurance losses and expenses. Develop insurance budgets for all Staples legal entities including Staples affiliates/sister companies. Responsible for the management of key relationships with insurers/underwriters, brokers and vendors. Create, lead and direct the development of risk reduction programs. Responsible for the execution and implementation of risk-related programs enterprise-wide.

**Primary Responsibilities:**

+ Work collaboratively with executive leadership and other corporate oversight functions to identify, evaluate, mitigate and monitor the organizations enterprise risks.

+ Develop the risk financing and retention strategies for the various coverage lines by working with executive leadership to establish and quantify each organization's risk appetite.

+ Evaluate, recommend and implement alternative risk financing tools as insurance market and economy changes.

+ Manage relationships with Insurers/Underwriters, Brokers and other Third-Party Service Providers.

+ Lead the Risk Management Department to develop and analyze the organizations historical loss trends leading to the development of necessary risk-transfer, safety, loss control and claims management programs and strategies.

+ Oversee a best-practices and outcomes based domestic casualty claims management program.

+ Identify and drive the mitigation of controllable events.

+ Ensure ongoing performance metric reporting.

+ Establish global insurance budgets and tracking process for all lines of coverage.

+ Manage accounting and risk management reconciliation and reserve analysis of all accrual and expense accounts.

+ Negotiate all insurance and claim management terms and conditions, inclusive of financing arrangements, collateral and escrow on all paid loss/incurred loss programs.

+ Ensure adequate self-insurance accruals determined by external actuarial partners.

+ Lead quarterly review and discussions with executive and senior leadership as well as internal and external auditors.

+ Develop and execute all plans and recommendations to keep accrual at acceptable levels.

+ Act as the organizations internal resource for all issues pertaining to Risk, Claims Management and Insurance. Develop policies and procedures to ensure each organizations compliance with sound risk management programs.

+ Provide subject matter expertise to internal teams as it relates to the organizations contractual risk transfer program and philosophy including the oversight of the organizations certificate of insurance program.

+ Provide leadership within the Risk Management Department that supports Staples culture (e.g. empower associates; promote accountability; provide development opportunities to associates; provide recognition for accomplishments; continue to develop and encourage enterprise-wide efforts to educate, train and otherwise support risk-related initiatives).


**Basic Qualifications:**

+ Bachelors degree required

+ Minimum 8 years in high level risk management position for large organization

**Preferred Competencies:**

+ Knowledge of business insurance and global local requirements where Staples and its affiliates/sister companies conduct business

+ Experience in self-insured plans

+ Strong negotiations skills

+ Excellent judgment and high integrity

+ Strong strategic ability; good business sense; develops strong relationships with internal and external partners

+ Strong leadership and managerial skills

+ Effective communication skills (written/verbal)

+ Industry Designation(s)
